“Lalitha” raagam…

The specialty of the raagam “Lalitha” is that it brings wealth and prosperity. There are many legends and stories which tell us about the effects of this particular raga. One such legend is believed to be an incident from the life of “Muthuswami Dhikshidhar”, one of the three patrons of carnatic music.

Dhikshidhar was a very poor and his family lived in a small hut. His wife once asked him for some jewels and he was left hopeless. That night he started praying to Goddess Lakshmi, singing this raagam “Lalitha”. When the King passed Dhikshidhar’s hut that night, he heard this raagam and felt bad that such a good composer and singer was living in such a poor state in his country. So from the next morning, the King started sending him all the wealth and food that he and his family will need. His wife said him that she had a dream in which the goddess herself blessed her and she was out of all the desire she had for riches.

Such legends exist for all the ragas and they tell us the greatness of every one of them. Though the singing of these ragas is not sure to produce such dramatic and drastic effects, the effects they have on the human mind and spirit is scientifically proven.

The Ragas and Thalas…

Many of us, even those with some basic knowledge of carnatic music, hardly know that there are thirty five types of thalas or rhythms. It is not that there can’t be any more rhythms other than these basic ones. But these are the ones which are said to be the most pleasant to hear.

There are seventy two basic ragas or tunes which are called the “Melakartha” ragas. From these basic tunes, thousands of newer tunes were formed. The smallest mistake or the slightest deviation from the raga is called “Abaswaram”. There are special ragas for every mood and every occasion. If they are sung in their purest form, they can bring the desired effect. For instance, “Bhoobalam” is to be sung in the morning and “Dhanyasi” in the evening. Singing and hearing “Dhanyasi” brings in happiness and peace of mind. “Vijayasri” and “Varali” ragas are those that makes us feel sad and remorse. Like the ragas, there are also thalas for different occasions.

If you take music in general, there are no such regulations. But the regulations in carnatic music have been proved scientifically that the specific ragas bring solace and enhancement of mood as mentioned earlier.

The Birth of Music…

Music is the most amazing discovery of mankind. Nature taught him the sounds, he coined them to produce a rhythmic pattern and thus music was born. The birds and the animals taught him the basic swaras from which the ragas were formed. The birth of all ragas and thalas in carnatic music are explained in various books written hundreds of years ago. The best known book of this sort is the one written by Nathamuni Pandithar. In his book, he has dealt a lot with the beliefs regarding the birth of the ragas. It is said that the fundamental “sa ri ga ma” was coined by an African thousands of years ago. The time when each of the thalas are believed to have born are mentioned in this book and the birth star and raasi of every thala is also written out. Although it’s not possible to check the correctness of the information referred in such books, we can get to know the many notions and legends which have been passed down generation after generation. These scriptures tell us the level of divinity with which carnatic music has got portrayed and nurtured over the ages.
